OVAL FARMERS MARKET

In a revolt against Tesco I’ve decided to try and be a more conscientious shopper, so I’ll be heading down to the Farmers Market at Oval this weekend to do my veg shopping. This market is a relatively new one, and is only little, but there are always a couple of organic veg and meat stalls, and sometimes some real seasonal gems – once it was samphire and oysters, another time a hog roast, and there’s a stall selling fabulous toasted cheese sandwiches which are very hard to walk away from…

Last week I treated myself to some wonderful smoked goat’s cheese and another soft goat’s cheese infused with garlic – I’m looking forward to seeing what’s there tomorrow!

Oval Farmers Market, St Mark’s Church open from about 10.00am until about 2.00pm on Saturdays (sorry I don’t have any more precise information, if anyone else does please let me know!)

I live in Houston and you would think we would have a lot of fresh farmer's markets here.. the last one I went to I was so excited about the "homegrown" peaches, but when I got home I discovered "made in mexico" stickers. Now that's not very local! GRRR.

Cigars, that's got to be about as far from local as it's possible to get! We have a similar problem with some farmers' markets in the UK; I think the mark-up is so high that it can be very tempting for unscrupulous types to buy cheap food in from elsewhere and pass it off as local...
