STAR WARS STEW

stew.jpgFirstly, apologies for my absence from this blog last week - my employer actually made me do some work for once (cue much gnashing of teeth from yours truly); however, I don't think I ate anything particularly exciting so you probably haven't missed out on much.

Anyhow, this recipe is something which you've probably eaten in some form or other before - this is by far the best name I've heard for it, though.  Calling it sausage hotpot would be far too prosaic.  This is comfort food of the first order, and very easy to make.

Ingredients

tin of baked beans

tin of chopped tomatoes

sausages (I like these)

tin of sweetcorn

potatoes, peeled and sliced

cheddar, grated

Method

Place the beans, sweetcorn, and tinned tomatoes into an ovenproof dish.  Add the sausages, cut into chunks (you can cook them first, if you want a shorter cooking time).  On top of this arrange the sliced potato (again, you can parboil the potatoes if you want it to cook quicker) and put the grated cheese on top.  Put in the oven until the potatoes are soft and the top is browned.   You can leave this to cook on a lower heat for a couple of hours - the longer it is cooked for, the better it tastes!

Hallo, this was first introduced to me by Blue Peter back in the 1980's it is a fab dish, so glad to see you are carrying on the tradition! Now does anyone else still have that infamous Blue Peter cookbook . . go on show your age!

My son has re-discovered this recipe and is now cooking it as I write for his own family but as his sister has reminded us it tastes even better with crushed crisps scattered on the top before it goes into the oven! They were true kids of the 80's!

My wife won a Blue Peter badge for sending in this recipe to Blue Peter. Her mum used to make it for her and they just named it Star Wars stew to enter a Star Wars themed competition. I think she said that the stew was made on TV by Delia Smith for Luke Hamill and Carrie Fisher.
She now, occasionally, makes a low fat vegetarian version, but only when I've been very good.

Errr, excuse me Mr B, but as the actual winner of the aforementioned badge for the aforementioned recipe, I can correct you on a few points: we did not name it Star Wars Stew simply to enter a competition, it was always named that as the first time we "created" it (and ok, my involvement was minimal and mainly involved layering on the potato slices, grating the cheese with added bits of finger, and crushing the crisps, though I did play a key part in the concept, i.e. ingredient choice) was when we came back from seeing Star Wars (the original first film) at the cinema and my mum decided to see what was sitting in the cupboard and fridge that we could use for dinner. The competition was to get your recipe in the Blue Peter Gorgeous Grub cookbook, so no Star Wars theme, and for this I won a Blue Peter button badge, a copy of the book and an Blue Peter apron, as did all the other winners. Subsequently Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill (Luke Hamill? oh dear, mixing your character and actor names and you call yourself a film buff) were visiting the Blue Peter studio and Biddy Baxter et al. decided to get the far-more-charismatic (than me or my mum) Delia Smith to make the recipe for them live on the show. And sorry to say Delia got it wrong in several places, but hey ho. As a result I was however lucky enough to receive a signed postcard from both actors, and most crucially a Blue Peter shield badge, for their efforts. So there we have it, the true story of Star Wars Stew; I'm very glad to know it is still being enjoyed by a whole new generation today...
